Basic Handgun Competency

Course Overview

This course equips learners with the knowledge, legal understanding and practical skills required for the safe handling, use and maintenance of handguns in both private and business environments. The programme combines legislative compliance with practical firearm competency in accordance with the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000) and relevant unit standards.

Learners will gain an understanding of the legal responsibilities associated with firearm ownership, including the lawful possession, carrying, storage and use of firearms and ammunition. The course further develops practical handgun handling skills, safe operating procedures, inspection and maintenance techniques, and the application of firearms in operational and business environments.

Successful completion of the course enables learners to demonstrate firearm competency, promote safe firearm practices and comply with relevant legislative requirements for firearm possession and use.

Module 1:
U/S 117705 – Demonstrate knowledge of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000) applicable to possessing a firearm. This unit standard is for anyone who needs to demonstrate knowledge of the Firearms Control Act in order to possess a firearm.

Learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the statutory duties and obligations of firearm ownership as contained in the Act;
  • Demonstrate understanding of the statutory prescriptions applicable to the possession, handling, carrying, storage and use of firearms as prescribed by the Act; and
  • Demonstrate understanding of the statutory prescriptions applicable to the possession and storage of ammunition as prescribed by the Act.

 

Module 2:
U/S 123512 - Handle and use a handgun This unit standard is for anyone who privately uses a handgun and or who requires a Competency Certificate
in terms of relevant legislation.

  • Handling a handgun
  • Using a handgun
  • Carrying out basic inspection and maintenance of a handgun for safe use

 

Module 3:
U/S 123515 - Handle and use a handgun for business purposes. This unit standard applies to persons who will, through the application of knowledge of the current legislation, carry, handle, shoot and maintain a handgun for business purposes.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling principles in a business environment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the mechanical functioning of the handgun.
  • Operate a handgun in a business environment
  • Demonstrate knowledge of handgun use under adverse conditions

Course Duration – 5 Days

Admission Requirements

This course is targeted at Traffic officers, Metropolitan Police officers
and Law Enforcement officers that need Basic handgun competency
training.

To participate in this course, the candidate must be a:

  • Traffic Officer,
  • Metropolitan Police Office,
  • Law Enforcement Officer, or
  • Nature Conservation Officers.
